Hydrogen a fuel for Now

Both of the presidential candidate talk about future energy needs for this country. But, neither seem to really have any solutions for our fuel problems facing us today everything seems to be in the future. McCain would like to add many more nuclear plants, Obama wants alternative sources. Both arguments have merit and both argument have their own problems. Where alternative sources like wind and solar would give us independence for electrical energy it does nothing for my car, and the same with nuclear. Hydrogen seems to be a clean, less expensive source of fuel for our automobiles but there isn't a distribution system, and unless this topic is brought up in the political forum there won't be a distribution system for hydrogen in the near future. Most of the major automotive manufacturers are working on a hydrogen burning engine that we can use now. Here are a couple of website for possible research http://www.carlist.com/autonews/2004/autonews_36.html

It seem that it is very possible to convert our existing gas burning vehicles into hydrogen burning vehicles. So why hasn't it happened or why aren't the presidential candidates talking about hydrogen. It seem pretty clear to me that if we only use hydrogen in our vehicle the benefits would greatly help the economy of this country. Ford seems to be working hard on the issue, so what happened to GM and Chrysler?

President Bush, in his state of the union speech said that he wanted the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to be American..oppps too late Honda beat the big three to it. In fact you can lease a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for about $600. http://automobiles.honda.com/fcx-clarity/drive-fcx-clarity.aspx
Do you think that the Japanese energy research budget helped Honda archive this goal. So why isn't the U.S. government helping the big three auto makers. Think about all of the jobs that would save and the taxes the jobs, hmmm I bet auto workers vote too.

It is clear that petroleum is going to go up in cost. It is also clear that if we change to hydrogen fuel it will require that we re-educate the government. The benefits of using hydrogen as fuel are so much greater than petroleum it seems like a no brainer to me. Hydrogen can be generated from several sources and as the supply increases the price will decrease. We will also have domestic sources for the production of hydrogen and will not have to rely on governments that do not have our best interest in mind when setting prices.

So here are my questions for discussion:
1. What do we need to do to bring hydrogen to the forefront as a fuel for motor vehicles?
2. Would you support a state amendment that would require the sale of hydrogen along with other fuels for automobiles?
3. Would you support a bill more like the California hydrogen distribution system?
4. Do you think that the solution lies in a state by state distribution program or will the federal government step up, kick the big oil lobbyist aside and do what is right for the people, the economy and the environment?
